I am signing up for my first Virtual Private Server and have a choice of operating systems which are CentOS, Debian, Fedora Core, Suse and Ubuntu.

Has anyone got any recomendations as to which would I should go for?

My VPS experience is very limited although I am a web designer so my general coding is ok.

Warning – Do not update to DirectAdmin 1.345 on CentOS 64bit …

by on Mar.18, 2010, under Server Maintenance

hi all,

Just a quick word of warning.

I updated to DirectAdmin 1.345 on CentOS 5.4 64bit yesterday, got the email to say everything had been done, tried to access DirectAdmin… Unable to connect – Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at <url>.

Thought not a problem – just need to restart the service.

Ok, odd. Tried a manual upgrade – same error.

I also noticed da-popb4smtp was not running:

Great… two things that aren’t working.

Sent off an email to DirectAdmin support – no reply as of yet.

I then re-installed CentOS 5.4 64bit on a different VPS so that it was a clean install, and proceeded to attempt to install DirectAdmin on that one.

Tried restarting da-popb4smtp too, again, same error as on the other VPS.

It looks like this is a completely broken upgrade if you are using CentOS 64bit – make sure not to update until it has been fixed.

Hope this helps someone avoid the situation I am in right now…
